Emberá Cultural Experience

A journey beyond the city and into one of Panama’s living cultures.

Duration
About 6 hours, lunch included
Plan this experience

Leave Panama City behind and travel by traditional canoe along the river to an Emberá community. The day is a cultural exchange: time to learn, listen and share, at the community’s pace.

Members of the community introduce their culture, traditions and history, with traditional music, dance and demonstrations of their craftsmanship. You can buy crafts directly from the artisans who made them, and lunch is a traditional meal shared in the community.

Know before you go

  • Who are the Emberá?

    • The Emberá are one of the Indigenous peoples of Panama, with communities in the Darién and along the Chagres River.
    • Some communities welcome visitors and share their culture on their own terms.
    • Their traditions include music, dance and fine craftsmanship.

Why it matters: Visiting with respect supports a living culture, not a performance.
